Out on the Street

Big horns and light.

M

usic. You know me and music. You know me and brass bands. Here’s a little portfolio about just that. In all the years that I photographed second lines I cannot tell you how many times I made pictures of brass bands.

I think it’s the passion that I like. The music matters because it is traditional for these walks. It’s bold, chaotic and loud. If I get in the middle of it, as I do, I couldn’t hear clearly for hours.

These musicians come out of music programs at different high schools. Many times they have gone on to something bigger and better, but they always come back to their roots. I’ve photographed one of our favorite sons, Trombone Shorty, as he came off the road from a long international tour and headed right to the streets.

I miss this about as much as anything.

Thank you. They are chaotic and soooo much fun. And, then there’s the food. Oh God.
