The Long Road

The long, furthest out in the Lower 9th Ward.

Just a couple of things.

I made this picture just about as far out in The Lower Ninth Ward as I could go. I probably shouldn’t have been out there so late in the day. This is where unsuspecting people get shot. I’m not even sure it’s intentional. I think young teenagers, er, little punks with guns just feel like shooting them and somebody happens to get in the way.

The shooting cases that occur out here never get solved. How could they? There’s nobody around to witness anything. There’s even an old abandoned police station with damaged police cars and two shot up ambulances parked in front. All of this has been there since Hurricane Katrina. That’s 17 years. Note that. Seventeen years and nothing’s changed. There’s almost nobody out there. Why should the city do anything about it?

The city won’t do anything about it. They can’t even keep the current police department properly staffed.

Another reason to live on a farm far far away.

And, in other news. Well, there’s a lot of other news.

So.

If you are really tired of biased news from either side — right or left — please go to 1440.com and subscribe. It’s a curated site that only posts fact based news, sports and features. For us it’s working great. Read the report and you’ve read everything you need for the day. 1440 is named after the approximate year that the printing press was invented.

If you are really tired of the nastiness of Facebook and Twitter there is a new site called Post. You enter your online contact details, join a very short waiting list and eventually be asked to join a group of posters who are very civil and share deep knowledge of their topics. The site was originally built for journalists but anybody is welcome.

And, finally.

By the time you read this Storyteller will have moved to Substack. There a number of reasons to make the move, but the biggest deal breaker in past attempts to leave WordPress is that I couldn’t take you with me. With Substack I can. In five minutes. It’s built for people like us. It’s very easy to use.

I’ll see you there.

Don’t need one. You’ll get an email just as you do here.
