I promise you, I never make self portraits. Selfies are a thing that I think are exceptionally narcissistic. I accidentally took a picture of myself that I kinda liked, because I intentionally made myself look wrinkly and dry old. I experimented with that for a while, but you never saw them. Ugh.
I don’t really look for portraits like these. They just sort of turn up on occasion, maybe like much of my better work, on the way to someplace else. Or, sitting in a cafe having a coffee.
That’s where the good stuff lies.

This came to me by watching British television. I’m sure you know the shoe, “The Great British Baking Show.” There are plenty of spin offs. But, did you know that there is a show about painting portraits?
It’s about capturing the essence of the subject not just about technical excellence. To me, it is fascinating. And, inspiring.
I suggest you watch it, but it’s on Tubi, which means it’s tucked away in the basement of Roku, the company who killed most televised sports coverage. It is worth the journey
